What is an inland port / dry port?
Through intermodal transportation assets, inland ports facilitate and process international trade while promoting value-added services as goods move through the supply chain away from traditional land, air, and coastal borders.
Inland port advantages
A shift to an inland port model is being made as a result of rising global imports. Upon arrival, goods are quickly offloaded from ships and moved to inland distribution centers for further handling and redistribution.
- Rail shipping can be more efficient than shipping by sea or by road alone.
- Avoid heavy congestion at seaports.
- Less trucking traffic and congestion on the region’s highways.
- Increased capacity. When inland ports are included in the supply chain, the intermodal capacity for inland freight distribution is increased. Offsite storage is possible with the additional capacity.
- Consolidation of import and distribution functions in one location.
- Away from seaports, more space is available for warehousing and distribution facilities. Due to limited land availability at seaports, some search for locations that support less intensive freight activities, such as transloading.
- Sustainable option. Rail traveling to and from an inland port uses less fuel than trucks.
- Expands the immediate market proximity.
- An abundance of reasonably priced commercial real estate for warehousing and distribution.
- Collaboration of stakeholders on implementation and management of inland ports.
- Speeds flow of cargo between ships and major land transportation networks.
- Inland ports have been successful for major retailers. Walmart and Home Depot are two of the largest users of inland ports. These and other companies consolidated multiple distribution centers into smaller hubs situated at inland ports with adequate logistics capacity to save money.
- Become a buffer in supply chains, acting as a temporary warehousing facility.
- Improved speed-to-market and the lowest cost shipping for a desirable alternative.
Our Intermodal Services facility at Cordele's Inland Port serves imports and exports to/from the Savannah port and the rest of the Southeast.
The Cordele Inland Port is a rail-centric terminal that sends and receives containerized freight to and from the Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah, GA. As a critical element of Georgia Ports Authority’s Network Georgia and its broader Rapid Routes initiatives, Cordele Intermodal Services created an inland gateway to the Port of Savannah, the second-largest port on the East Coast. The Cordele Inland Port, through Cordele Intermodal Services, offers a 200-mile rail route to the GPA’s Garden City Terminal. This connectivity creates and expands international markets for regional businesses. The port offers an efficient option for an all-truck-dray to the deep-water port of Savannah for the CIS target market of Southwest Georgia, Southern Alabama, and Western Florida.
The Cordele Inland Port is located less than one mile from I-75 and Georgia Highways 300 and 280. CIS offers overnight rail service to the Georgia Ports Authority three times a week via shortline railroads, Heart of Georgia, and Georgia Central. In addition to the rail service, CIS owns a private fleet of tractors and chassis that pick up and deliver containerized freight to and from the Cordele rail ramp. Cordele Intermodal Services also offers over-the-road trucking, warehousing, and transloading – a comprehensive solution to any supply chain.
Cordele Intermodal Services has a close working relationship with the Georgia Ports Authority and all the steamship lines that call on the fastest growing port in the USA. CIS can source empty containers from any steamship line for export. Maersk Lines and CMA CGM have designated Cordele Intermodal Services as a Container Yard, allowing CIS to depot their equipment at the Cordele terminal. By having equipment closer to the shipper, versus at the port in Savannah, CIS offers a much more responsive service to shippers. Cordele’s inland location also reduces the number of trucks needed to transport the same amount of containers that a traditional all-truck-dray requires.
Construction has commenced on a double-track rail spur that will connect CSX and the Heart of Georgia railroads through the Cordele Inland Port. This connectivity gives existing Cordele businesses the ability to ship greater volumes via rail and also provides excellent accessibility for manufacturers, distribution centers, or other commodities to be highly competitive on both a domestic and an international stage.
The Crisp County Industrial Development Authority owns the Cordele Inland Port and has land available for development.
Cordele-Crisp County is the only community along the I-75 corridor that is served by 2 Class I railroads, CSX and NS, and one shortline railroad, Heart of Georgia. The Cordele Inland Port takes full advantage of this unique rail infrastructure. While Cordele Intermodal Services offers a comprehensive logistics solution, the Cordele-Crisp County Industrial Development Council promotes agriculture and commerce, as well as expands industry in the area.
Cordele boasts several communities and state incentives, such as:
