What is cross-docking?
Essentially, cross-docking removes the “storage” link of the supply chain.
A truck or railroad car’s contents are unloaded, sorted, and reloaded onto a truck or rail car to continue their transit. Transport vehicles can be consolidated for products headed to the same destination. Alternatively, large shipments can also be broken down into smaller groups for easier delivery. The end result in both scenarios is a leaner, more efficient supply chain.
Pre-distribution vs. post distribution cross-docking
Cross-docking can be broken down into two basic types: Pre-Distribution and Post-Distribution.
Pre-Distribution involves unloading, sorting, and repackaging goods according to predetermined distribution instructions. Customer identification takes place before the goods leave the supplier.
Based on demand, sorting is deferred until the appropriate facility and customer are selected. Therefore, goods may spend a little more time in distribution or cross-docking facilities, but retailers and suppliers benefit from the extra time as they can make smarter, more informed decisions about where to ship their goods based on in-store inventory, sales forecasts, and trends at the point of sale.
Cross-docking advantages
Cross-docking has several major advantages for retail supply chains. Inventory handling and storage costs are greatly reduced since products spend less time in the warehouse (or none at all).
The retailer has a competitive advantage since goods usually reach their final destination (i.e. the customer) much faster.
