What is transloading?
When a load of freight is transloaded, it is transferred from one mode of transportation to another. Most commonly, it is used when one mode cannot be used for the entire trip, for instance when goods must be shipped internationally from one inland point to another.
Transloading advantages
A transloading warehouse provides a range of advantages to a company when moving goods and shipments. A unique tactic can be implemented to ensure products reach their destinations at the right time at any point in your logistical strategies.
Main benefits may include:
- Supply chain versatility: There is a possibility that your customers are located in remote locations. By allowing you to choose the most suitable transportation route based on available transportation routes, transloading in logistics offers more options for reaching the destination safely and securely. - Lower overall costs: This method can be used to control fuel and transportation costs. When rail cars are used for part of a route, fuel costs can be significantly reduced since rail cars use four times less fuel than vehicles alone. Trucks are a fast and efficient way to deliver goods when switching to vehicle transportation.
- Freight consolidation: It is possible to consolidate large amounts of freight onto fewer rail cars by transloading warehouses, therefore making them more cost-effective. Each truck can drive to the transload facility located along the rail line if material or goods are located at multiple manufacturing sites but must all go to the same location. While traveling closer to the destination, the goods can be consolidated into a single freight car at each facility as the train moves along the route.
