What is Yard Spotting?
Yard spotting helps move trailers around distribution yards and terminals more quickly. Yard spotters perform similar duties to spotters, switchers, and yard jockeys. Transporting empty and full trailers around a freight yard requires tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, or spotter vehicles.
Advantages of Yard Spotting
Move more cargo per day
Yard trucks are similar to forklifts and hand trucks when it comes to moving trailers. Injuries are more likely to occur when unloading trucks by hand. With a forklift, manual effort is minimized (and injuries are less likely). Yard trucks are no different. By not having to raise and lower trailer stands or constantly enter and exit the cab, operators can move more cargo per shift. With a sliding back door and catwalk, yard trucks can be hooked up to trailers and airlines without the operator dismounting. They simply step out onto the platform, hook everything up, then step back inside the cabin. An operator can move more trailers per shift using a spotter truck versus an over-the-road truck.
More maneuverability
Having a short wheelbase, a tight turning radius, and a solid-mounted rear axle allows yard trucks to maneuver trailers and containers into tight spaces.
No CDL required
Yard trucks are considered powered industrial trucks, and neither ANSI nor OSHA requires operators to have a commercial driving license (CDL).Â
Lowe maintenance costs
Over-the-road trucks are designed for long hauls on relatively smooth roads, whereas terminal tractors are designed for rugged environments of swapping trailers.
