It is easy to distinguish fumigation from other types of contamination because it is too small to occupy an entire container. Consequently, the cargo will travel with other LCL items belonging to other owners in the same container.

For fumigation purposes, the cargo is kept separate from others. On-site fumigation occurs at the forwarding agent’s premises. Under gas-proof sheeting, items are treated with fumigant for a minimum period before being ventilated.

The treated goods are then issued a fumigation certificate. When it is loaded into the container, relevant fumigation standards are applied by the fumigator in accordance with the destination and whether it contains wood packaging material (WPM).
